First held in 1892, it’s affectionately known as La Doyenne – The Old Lady – a nod to its age and prestige. But don’t be fooled by the nickname; there’s nothing gentle about this race. Unlike the cobbled chaos of Roubaix or the sprinter’s playground of Milan–San Remo, Liège is a war of attrition, fought on endless climbs, twisting roads, and with no room for weakness. Riders head south from Liège to Bastogne, then back north over a series of relentless hills that drain the legs and test the mind. The likes of Tadej Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Alejandro Valverde have all etched their names into its storied history, conquering not just their rivals, but the race itself.
